Septoplasty

  • Why do I need this operation?
  • The nasal block may be due to a structural problem with the nasal septum. This is a piece of bone and cartilage which divides the inside of the nose in half. If the nasal septum is kinked so that it blocks the free passage of air through one or both sides of your nose it can be successfully corrected by septoplasty.
  • What happens during the operation?
  • Whilst you are asleep, under general anesthetic, a cut is made in the nasal lining just inside the nostril. This will not leave a scar on the face. Next the lining of the nose on either side of the septum is raised so that we can see the bone and cartilage. The septum is realigned, if necessary, by removing the obstructing tissue. The lining replaced and may be stitched together. These stitches are absorbable and do not have to be removed.
  • How will feel afterwards?
  • You will feel drowsy until the anesthetic wears off. You will have to breathe through your mouth for three hours due to nasal pack which can give you a dry throat. You may have a headache for a few hours. Sometimes the upper central teeth feel numb after the operation but this gets better within four to six weeks. When the packs are removed there is often some bleeding that stops within a few minutes, rarely the nose needs repacking to stop it. Initially the nasal lining will be swollen so you will feel stuffy for one week after the operation.
  • How long will be in hospital?
  • This is usually for one night after your operation. Your operation can be done as a day case.
  • When can I go back to work?
  • We advise taking one week off work following surgery, resting and avoiding strenuous activities.
